Urban Sketches

Over the summer I did a number of quick paintings and sketches on location out and around New York.

Here are a few of the good ones. The first was a day early in the summer down at Coney Island. I didn’t have a hot dog at Nathan’s but I probably should have. I met my fellow classmate Jessica down on the boardwalk and we painted for a couple of hours.

Next was a day I spent at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. I sat near one of the historical houses on the green. I was well prepared with a camping chair and all my supplies for Gauche painting.

I also spent some time up at 44th Street in Midtown Manhattan. I visited the Intrepid Air and Space Museum and painted some of the aircraft on top of the carrier. I want to go back there and paint again. There is a space shuttle, a Concord and a submarine among the many features of the museum. There is also the spectacular Intrepid Air Craft Carrier itself.

The last one is a quick drawing I did while running the lighting for the show Groundhog Day. I did it between two shows on my dinner break (not actually during the show!). I walked from 52nd Street up to Columbus Circle and did a quick pencil and ink drawing of the fountain at the entrance to Central Park.It was getting dusky by the time I finished it which is why it looks so blue.
